Hubert Mugliett, the group Human Resource Manager (HRM) for Cedar Rose Int. Services Ltd, has recently graduated from Robert Gordons University in Aberdeen, one of Scotland`s most highly respected educational institutions. We are delighted to announce that Hubert has not only been honoured with a distinction, but he is amongst the first to research the effect of national culture on the employee`s perception of the psychological contract, at the micro level of a single SME organisation. The following interview looks to ask Mr Mugliett what was the reason for the studies, and what was the outcome… What is it that you have graduated in:
I have graduated as Masters in Human Resource Management with Robert Gordon University. What is Human Resource Management (HRM)
Sometimes it`s easier to start with what something isn`t. HRM is not simply about keeping tabs of whom the company employs, what they are paid and what benefits they are entitled to. It`s is much more than that. It is not simply about making people aware of the policies that the company has on file and making sure they are adhered to. HRM is about working at a strategic level to translate the company`s vision into long term achievable goals with the management of human resources, through creating a synergy in the workplace that facilitates planning, understanding and communication, making coming to work a dynamic adventure that people look forward to and want to be a part of. Why undertake such a study? I understand that this meant that for the last four years you have been working full time and studying. Quite a commitment.
Yes it is a commitment and it is not always easy. At one point I had to suspend my studies because of a number of personal and work related developments that actually took up so much time. However, finding the discipline to study, daily, month after month and year after year; being able to have faith in one`s self and work towards a goal that is not easily achievable or short term, teaches one a lot, creates new skills and sharpens one`s focus. Also, in this ever changing global world of work, standing still is not an option. One has to constantly develop one`s skills, reinvent one`s self and keep abreast and relevant to what`s happening in the wider field of one`s profession. Doing this makes it easier to deliver an HR that makes a difference, that helps create potential within the organisation as a whole. What was your dissertation about? And what were the results
My dissertation was to research, at the micro level, such as a small organisation of say less than 100 employees, the effect of national culture on the employee`s perception of the Psychological Contract (PC). The PC is the unwritten agreement that the employee enters into when embarking on a work relationship with an organisation. My contention was that if an effect could be registered at such a micro level it would open up a field of study that could lead to practical and powerful tools for the HR professional towards shaping and moulding that perception which is at the heart of the employer / employee relationship. It was a study that, whilst building on other great studies already undertaken in the field, dared to look at the practical application of the Psychological Contract concepts and management in the work environment. The results were certainly positive. Though one must be cautious in interpretation, given the size of the organisation studied, the research showed that at the very least it would be worth continuing with further amplified research in the area and that the practical benefits to HRM merited the attention. I understand the research was well received and you received a distinction for your studies.
Yes. It was wonderful to have peers acknowledge the validity of the work. I must also thank the wonderful, patient colleagues that allowed me to ask so many questions and who gave me their consent and trusted me with their thoughts so freely. It is their openness and generosity that made this research possible and I can only say I am very proud to form part of the Cedar Rose team.
